Heart-Focused Breathing: A Gentle Way to Calm the Nervous System

In this post, we’re introducing heart-focused breathing—a grounding and loving-kindness technique that can help strengthen the vagal brake and support your nervous system in shifting into a calmer, more regulated state.

What is Heart-Focused Breathing?

Heart-focused breathing invites you to gently bring your attention to your heart while breathing slowly and deeply. By combining breath, touch, and calming imagery, this practice helps create a sense of safety and ease in the body.

How to Practice

Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down.

  • Close your eyes, or soften your gaze on a fixed point

  • Place both hands gently over your heart

  • Begin breathing slowly and deeply

As you breathe, keep your awareness centered on your heart. Imagine a sense of calm, peace, or warmth radiating from this space.

The image you use is entirely personal. You might imagine:

  • A soft, calming color

  • Gentle energy flowing around your heart

  • Flowers blooming

  • A peaceful nature scene

Choose whatever feels safe and soothing to you, and allow that feeling to grow with each breath.

Continue this practice for at least 3 minutes.

Why It Helps

This technique supports the nervous system in shifting out of an agitated or stressed state and into a place of calm. The combination of slow breathing, physical touch, and positive imagery helps signal safety to the body, making it easier to regulate emotions and reduce tension.

A Gentle Reminder

There’s no right or wrong way to visualize—what matters most is that it feels calming and supportive to you. If your mind wanders, simply bring your attention back to your breath and the feeling around your heart.
