What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can look like many different things.  It can show up as stomach upset or headaches.  It can be constant tension and worry. It can be assuming the worst is going to happen.

Anxiety can make you feel that your world is getting smaller; maybe the places and spaces you used to enjoy become easy to avoid or extremely uncomfortable.  The constant worry is exhausting.

Anxiety can be very general or very specific.  It may be new in your life or you may have managed the stress for years.

Anxiety can impact relationships at school, at work, and at home.  It causes physical distress and discomfort if not outright panic.

It’s your nervous system “freaking out”; telling you to run, hide, or fight, when there’s no real danger.  It can look like overreacting, withdrawing from friends and social situations, and shutting down. It can be confusing, and generally feels awful.

How We Help With Anxiety

Our therapists in London, ON, use a variety of modalities, tools, and strategies to help you manage anxiety in your life. These include EMDR, IFS, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness, DBT and CBT, and others. Most often our therapists offer a blend of modalities to best support you.

Anxiety therapy often begins with finding the strategies to increase your sense of calm and control in the present, and then can shift to working with anything in the past that is connected to it.

Strategies to manage stress, panic, generalized anxiety, and anxiety related to trauma may all look slightly different, but we work to ensure they fit for you.

What Anxiety Therapy Looks Like

Anxiety therapy begins with relationship building, assessment and goal setting. This gives you a chance to explain how anxiety is showing up and impacting your life, and your therapist will learn about the things that are important to you, your history, and the people and relationships in your life that are meaningful. Together you come up with a plan that makes sense for you.

As anxiety therapy progresses the work is done.  It can be emotional, it can bring insight, it can allow for change.  How that work is done is up to you and your therapist; your experience with their knowledge will determine the strategies, tools, methods, and modalities that are used.

Anxiety therapy is done when the symptoms of anxiety become manageable, lessened, or no longer problematic. You will feel increased control and calm that is sustainable at home, at work or school, and in relationships.
